• Current Loop Translator - Many types of programmable logic controllers (PLCs) only have current loop inputs, and are incompatible with voltage output sensors. Current loops are useful because extremely long cables can be used with no signal degradation. Cable lengths exceeding 1 kilometer can be run with no degradation or scaling to the signal. Compare this to a voltage output sensor where the resistance of the cable forms a voltage divider and scales down the voltage as the cable length increases. Current loops provide a sensor output current that is proportional to the sensor's reading. The standard for most current loops is 4mA to 20mA. So the sensor's minimum value corresponds to 4mA and the maximum value corresponds to 20mA. Because the loop never outputs less than 4mA, broken wires or defective sensors can easily be detected. (If the the current is less than 4mA then there is an error.)

• High Ohmic Resistor - High Ohmic resistors have resistances greater than 10M ohms. They come as chip resistors, or glass encapsilated hermetically sealed devices. It is important not to touch them with bare hands, as skin oil can change their resistive properties. If they become contaminated, they can be washed with isopropyl alcohol and lint free wipes and then baked to dry them out. They must also be cleaned thouroughly after being soldered, to remove any solder flux. Another trick is to place a hole in the PCB under them so that they are more easily cleaned, and to remove any parallel resistance affects of the PCB. • SDI-12 Sensor Translator - Although SDI-12 is a cryptic hardware and software protocol, it is still a widely used standard interface between environmental sensors and data loggers. Sensor vendors have had the difficult and costly burden of creating their own SDI-12 solutions from scratch. Because of the many eccentricities of the SDI-12 protocol, it is a difficult task to create a truly compliant SDI-12 sensor interface.
